Screen names on Yahoo Messenger...?

Why is it..when i highlight messenger at the home page i can see some SN.. but when i actually log into YIM.. some names appear and other dont? Is it the invisible feature? they dont want me to see them or is it because they have yet to add me as a friend? why can i see them from yahoo.com but not YIM on the program?
