They received the name Indians because the reason for exploration was to find a faster route to the east Indies to trade spices and other things. Names of some tribes are Sioux, Navajo, Cherokee, Shawnee, Chippewa, Algonquin, and many many more. There is much I do not know but I do know that settlers completely destroyed their way of life and often their civilizations in pretty much all cases. They were in balance with nature unlike their European counterparts, the diseases such as the common cold wreaked havoc on many tribes who had no tolerance to such things.
